Freelance Public Relations Pricing Guide

Your Hourly Rate: Pinpoint a price that will attract clients while still being lucrative.

Pricing is personal.

It’s about how much money you are going to earn, and that’s something people don’t historically talk about. Sometimes keeping financial information close to the chest makes sense, but as you’re building your own freelance PR business, it is also very difficult to seemingly create a rate out of thin air. So, let’s put some transparency to the numbers, and pinpoint strategies for pricing that will work for you.

Spoiler alert: You should be earning enough to cover the cost of this pricing guide in less than an hour!

How I Created My Freelance PR Hourly Rate

When I started my freelance PR career, I had around 5 years of PR experience and a handful of years of journalism experience under my belt. I’ve been working as a public relations freelancer for more than six years. When I started out, I had complete confidence in the PR skills I’d accumulated through my past experiences, but I had no idea how to price my services. I did a lot of research and was able to find plenty of advice about pricing services, but I couldn’t find the numbers; no one would mention a dollar amount.

Through trial and error (including pricing too high and more often, too low), I’ve discovered hourly rate ranges that can act as a guideline as you set the price that is right for you!
